Strawberry-Tarragon Gimlet

Meet the cocktail that was inspired by a sandwich…  A sandwich I never even ate.  (Someday I’ll make sense, but that day is not today.)

See, I’m a fan of a local cheese shop/deli.  Somewhat masochistically, I read their Facebook updates on what they’re serving for lunch, even though I cannot get there during the day because of dumb logistic reasons.  Occasionally, their lunch creations involve strawberry-tarragon jam.  (…And brie–ugh, told you.  It’s downright painful and I don’t know why I do it to myself.)

So what’s a girl to do?  Oh, I don’t know.  Let’s try pouring gin on strawberries and tarragon.  It’ll be fun–I promise.

Lemon and Vanilla Bean Rice Pudding with Blueberry Compote

I swear, sometimes I can’t handle the excellence that is this time of year (I’ll be saying the same thing again in six months–mark my words).  The daylight, the jacketless afternoon walks to the coffee shop, the daffodils and tulips everywhere, and the impulse buys of mint-green shorts at Target (I REGRET NOTHING).  So good.

Now, the downside to this time of year (well, this time of every odd-numbered year) for me is that I’m working a lot.  By “a lot,” I mean 80 hours a week, sometimes.  I try not to talk about it too much, just as I try not to talk about the weather, for the same reason: it’s boring.  ”You’re busy?  Oh really?   FASCINATING.”

But, I wanted to give you a heads up.  In case you wondered why I’m not posting as much–because if you like this thing enough to wonder, I owe you an explanation, and probably dessert.

Such as…  Comforting dessert.  Creamy and somewhat rich, but zingy and fruity at the same time–because I like you THAT much.  True facts.

Kumquat and Poppy Seed Pancakes

You know what? Weekends were a fantastic idea.  Just wonderful.  A Sunday morning is one of the few opportunities I have to be as polite with myself as with everyone else–instead of mentally barking out orders to my sleepy brain to get out of bed and do X, Y and Z immediately, I can politely ask.

“Hey, self…  You look awesome today–I like how your bangs are pointing to the left AND right…  It’s visionary.  Cutting Edge.  Genius.  Say, what do you feel like doing today?”

Well, this weekend, I wanted to (A) brush my hair and pin my bangs back into an acceptable situation–all hail dry shampoo!– and (B) make a cappuccino and a fat stack of pancakes.  Citrusy ones, with poppy seeds.

Wheatberry Salad with Apple, Fennel and Pomegranate

This is for your hangover.

Not the drinking kind–for a booze hangover, in fact, I’d give you a high-five and direct your debauched little butt to waffle thing one and waffle thing two.  Maybe some eggs sitting on a bunch of spicy tomato and chickpea sauce.  Oh!  Or a chicken and waffles sandwich.  Which, by the way, has bacon-jalapeno jam on it, which you could eat with a spoon if you really YOLOed it up the night before.  Or maybe it’s lunchtime already and you feel like spicy Thai noodles to make you feel human again (if only by melting your face off).  Hair of the dog? I have a dangerous idea for you.

What I really have in mind today, though, is a gravy-meat-potatoes hangover.  We’ve all been there; if you can’t possibly stand the thought of drippy, fatty, gravy-laden meat, atop a bed of starchy, butter-laden potatoes, I have an idea for you.  It’s fresh, hearty, filling and flavorful.

See, I’m not a lazy food blogger–I’m just thinking ahead, is all.

Apple, Cheddar and Prosciutto Waffles

If my coworkers ever see me limping into the office on crutches, they should probably not assume I was kickboxing.  Let’s not be ridiculous…

If they knew me at all, they would probably bring up this Office classic:

Except that it would be more accurate to replace “Foreman grill” with “waffle iron.”

I’m clumsy, but that’s neither here nor there–what I’m saying is, I’ve been making a LOT of waffles lately.  And if I did have a kitchen appliance in my bedroom a la Michael Scott…  It would be a Belgian waffle iron.

Anyway.  The appliances will stay where they are for now, but still–no slowing down with the waffles!  Inspired by these pear-gorgonzola beauties, I forge ahead.  This time, there are cured pork products too.

Pear and Gorgonzola Waffles

Sometimes I can tell I’m going to be controversial.  Today is…  Such a time.  Hide yo kids, hide yo pets, hide yo everybody.  Politics!  (Kidding)  Religion!  (Kidding)  Stinky cheese in waffles! (Not kidding)

You might like weird food.  You might like sweet-and-savory things.  You might even like pears and gorgonzola together, which is generally accepted as a good combination.  …Aaannnd, you might still not be on board, but that’s okay.  I can’t promise you’ll like this–can I ever?  I can only tell you I loved it, and why.  So here goes!
