Farro with Roasted Carrots and Preserved Lemons

I’m afraid I am becoming predictable.  Smoking! Gorgonzola and goat cheese in everything!  Experimental ice cream flavors galore!

And here I am, once again bringing you farro.  Thank goodness I can’t physically see you rolling your pretty little eyes at me.

This reminds me of some interview I’d seen with Mariah Carey, where she addressed criticisms that her songs sound the same. Being the capital-d Diva that she is, girlfriend was just like, “Well, excuse me for having a style.”  Boom!

I apologize.  That interview is firmly lodged in my brain where Spanish verb conjugations ought to be…  And it’s probably never leaving.

Apple-Cinnamon Breakfast Farro

What a weekend this one was!  Foodbuzz Festival ’12, my first, was a dashing success in my book.  Lovely people, lovely setting of San Francisco, lovely weather, lovely food and drink, and did I mention the lovely people?

So, so excellent.  I can’t wait for next year.  Going to these things alone is downright terrifying, but all you have to do is remember that food people are the best people there are–it’s the truth.  Food people love each other.

Anyway, all that crazy, amazing madness called for a very, very lazy Sunday.  It called for fruit that I’d picked up at an orchard in Auburn, CA.  It called for wholesome, toothy whole grains, a touch of cinnamon and the natural sweetness of just a bit of maple syrup.  Yup.

Roasted Beet and Farro Salad

I got karma-ed big time this morning.  Big.  Time.

See, last night I did an evil thing that I normally don’t do.  I saw a spider scurrying across the kitchen floor (not that this happens often), and, well…  It was moving too quickly for me to do my usual hippie-dippy thing with a sheet of paper and gentle release back into the outdoors.  This bad boy (or girl) had places to be, things to do.  So.  I think you can figure out what I did.

This morning, I was up way too early, and as I groggily made my way into the kitchen in the dark, my sock found itself, all of a sudden, cold and wet and covered with bubbly foam.  In the very same spot where my spider friend met its maker, which was actually the first thought in my sleepy, guilty brain.

Coincidence?  Doubt it.

You got me, spider….  And you have CostCo to thank for packaging dishwashER liquid and dishwashING liquid in a way-too-similar manner.  Universe, karma, CostCo–all working together on your eight-legged behalf.  I salute you, and hope all is well on the other side.

If you were human, I’d make you a nice salad…  But I also wouldn’t murder you (swearsies).  I hope dedicating this post to you is enough.

Anyway, salad.

Butternut Squash Farro

Exciting news in science today, no?

But, one of my first thoughts, natch, was: I really, really wish NASA would stop obsessing about “Earthlike” planets. Have we no ambition? This place is great and all.  I like dirt and the ocean and fish and everything.  But things could be better.  For example: earthquakes.  Wouldn’t the ideal planetary surface have much less in the way of tectonic plates and much more in the way of plush rising bread dough?  Think about it.  That would be worth a 600-lightyear-long trip, perhaps.  Although I suggest that we disinvite this one.

This is a lot of outer space talk for a food blog.  I sorry.  So let me awkwardly segue: Perhaps my ideal planet would also sprout forth butternut squash premixed with onion, walnuts, thyme and goat cheese?
