Super Bowl Roundup

Because everyone agrees the food is the best part of this, right?

Suggestions for party guests:

1) Bacon-Jalapeno Jam. Double the recipe (trust me!), bring a baguette, become an instant hero.

2) Buttermilk ranch, completely from scratch. Also impressive!  Your favorite wings need a sidekick.

Double Chocolate and Candied Orange Peel Cookies

You guys…  I have never pawned off  a batch of cookies with more urgency.  Normally, baked goods will hang out on my counter for a while, waiting for me to meet up with a friend or catch my neighbor when she’s going out for a walk.  I will enjoy one here and there in the meantime.  But this was what you might call a Dangerous Situation.  Janeane Garofalo would rightly make fun of me, but the cookies had to go!

I’m all about the orange-chocolate combo, you see.  The fragrance, the bitterness of the orange, plus rich, dark, swoon-worthy chocolate…  It’s all so dreamy.

And man, these are good.  Chewy, rich and fudgy, with tons of texture courtesy of crunchy pecans and toothsome, chewy candied orange.  That’s two kinds of chewy for those of you who are keeping track!  Flavorwise, need I say more?  My goodness.

Double Chocolate and Almond Chunk Cookies

Things I really love lately:

1. How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran.  You should read it if you’re a woman.  You should read it if you’re a man.  You REALLY should read it if you enjoy wonderful things…  And laughing out loud in public places.

2. Elvis Costello (again).  Do you think he and Diana Krall (coolest marriage ever, or what?) would adopt me?  I mean, I make snacks and love napping, so…

3. This owl vase.  It needs no explaining.

4. Colin Meloy, superhero nerd-lit singer-songwriter of the Decemberists, and Rob Delany, Funny Ridiculous Man, tweeting each other.  YES, Twitter.  Do what you do.

5. This watch from Etsy and this nail polish.  I may or may not be a mess…  But my hands (at least one at a time) look awesome.

6. These cookies I’m about to tell you about.  So much chewiness.  So much chocolate.  And then there are almonds.  And!  They’re quick to make.  I’m sold.

I just got back from a big fat road trip to Denver!  And I made cookies.  But first things first…

Let’s check out some Denver.

Mint Chocolate Macarons

Olympic events I would surely medal in:

-Greco accidental Facebook liking/frantic Roman Facebook unliking.
-Synchronized inappropriate “you too!” reflexes.  Enjoy your flight as well, taxi driver.

-Floor exercise: power napping, no-pillow division.
-Accidentally flushing contact lenses down the sink, 100m relay.
-Women’s half-middleweight making the same joke twice in one night and hoping nobody notices.

We all have our strengths, right?

Also, you know how photographers always make medalists bite their medals?  “Good job, you are literally the best on the planet, now is the part where we break your tooth.”  I think it’s about time we started handing out cookies for Olympian photo ops.  My first nomination is these: crunchy-shelled, nutty, chewy, filled with rich dark chocolate, spiked with cool mint.  So, so good, especially chilled.

Profiteroles with Cocoa-Rum Cream

Mother’s Day!  Tomorrow!

Say hi to your mutha for me!

Turns out Mark Wahlberg wasn’t happy about this sketch.  MARKY MARK.  Chill out.  Make some profiteroles for your mom.  Come on now.

It’s not that hard…  A little time consuming, but worth it.  Then we can make some tea and go talk to animals.
