Oh, you didn’t notice? That’s a little embarrassing for me, but I’ll live. See, I never know whether to acknowledge absences of any sort. If a tree falls in the woods and has a silly little blog that it probably takes too seriously… I lost that analogy already.
Anyhow, if you follow me on social media, you may know that my beloved camera finally bit the dust after five long years. You have to admit–even if my oven literally blew up, lack of a camera would still be a better excuse. No photos, no blog–period.
Long story short: I’ve got two thumbs and a lovely new D90 to play with, and while I’m still figuring it out, I think I’ll grow into it just fine. Onward and upward.
I felt like a total bumhole about this particular absence because in my last (rah rah single life) post, I promised something for all you LUVAHS, for Valentine’s Day–and I meant it! Honestly. I had this drink in mind for a long, long time.
And look: the garnish is an orange peel heart!
I did … cutesy. For you. And I even liked it. I don’t know myself anymore, and I think the 2 ounces of rye is to blame.
This is a drink with bite–dry, spicy rye and bitter Campari are the backbone here. The rest is somewhat all over the place, but that’s intentional: I wanted a drink that (just like the best relationships, awww) is greater than the sum of its parts. I’ve been trying to find new uses for all these fantastic Middle Eastern ingredients I love to cook with but rarely get an opportunity to use, so I threw in some pomegranate molasses into this drink as sweetener, rose water for a bit of fragrance, and of course, blood orange for that brilliant deep color and massive deliciousness.
I’m so happy with this one, you guys. I’ll be drinking ’em until the last of the season’s blood oranges within a 50-mile radius vanishes–true story.

- 2 ounces rye (I used Templeton)
- 3/4 ounce Campari
- 3/4 ounce blood orange juice
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons pomegranate molasses
- 1/2 teaspoon rosewater
- Blood orange peel, for garnish (optional)
- Combine all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake. Strain into a chilled coupe or double rocks glass (you'll need something that holds at least 4 ounces). Garnish as desired.
