Teeth of the Hydra Cocktail

I (air punch left) AM (air punch right) BACK (jazz hands).

Oh, you didn’t notice? That’s a little embarrassing for me, but I’ll live.  See, I never know whether to acknowledge absences of any sort. If a tree falls in the woods and has a silly little blog that it probably takes too seriously… I lost that analogy already.

Anyhow, if you follow me on social media, you may know that my beloved camera finally bit the dust after five long years. You have to admit–even if my oven literally blew up, lack of a camera would still be a better excuse. No photos, no blog–period.

Long story short: I’ve got two thumbs and a lovely new D90 to play with, and while I’m still figuring it out, I think I’ll grow into it just fine. Onward and upward.

I felt like a total bumhole about this particular absence because in my last (rah rah single life) post, I promised something for all you LUVAHS, for Valentine’s Day–and I meant it! Honestly. I had this drink in mind for a long, long time.

And look: the garnish is an orange peel heart!

I did … cutesy. For you. And I even liked it. I don’t know myself anymore, and I think the 2 ounces of rye is to blame.

This is a drink with bite–dry, spicy rye and bitter Campari are the backbone here. The rest is somewhat all over the place, but that’s intentional: I wanted a drink that (just like the best relationships, awww) is greater than the sum of its parts. I’ve been trying to find new uses for all these fantastic Middle Eastern ingredients I love to cook with but rarely get an opportunity to use, so I threw in some pomegranate molasses into this drink as sweetener, rose water for a bit of fragrance, and of course, blood orange for that brilliant deep color and massive deliciousness.

I’m so happy with this one, you guys. I’ll be drinking ‘em until the last of the season’s blood oranges within a 50-mile radius vanishes–true story.

Another true story: I missed you. For real. Thanks for being the very coolest! MUAH.

  1. 2 ounces of rye is always to blame. Delicious sounding drink. I, too, am always looking for more cocktails to stick Middle Eastern ingredients in! Harissa is coming…

  3. Interested to hear how the new D90 compares with the recently dearly departed camera. Do you make your own pomegranate molasses or is there a brand you recommend?

    • I’m loving the D90 so far! It’s amazing how such a relatively small change still takes a while to get used to. But I’ll get there. I usually just buy Sadaf pom molasses–it’s really the only brand I ever see.

  4. We’re glad you’re back! And honored that you did cutesy for us. :) I have to say, that’s some pretty classy cutesy.

I’ve been making & drinking blood orange cocktails, too, but none as fancy as yours! Mostly I’ve been making blood orange margaritas with blood orange juice + lime juice and less sweetener than your average margarita. Since I’ve still never purchased anything fancy like rye or Campari, I’m not working with quite as full of a bar as you are, but one thing I do have is pomegranate molasses — I love your idea to incorporate that into cocktails!

    • Thanks Allison! I think you could make a version of this work with what you have on hand! If you use sweetener for your margaritas, I do wonder how pom molasses would work in there, plus a dash of rosewater… The experiments never end.

  5. Hahaha! The “cutesy” orange peel heart is simply precious! Sorry about the your old camera but happy about your new D90 :-) Have a great week!! xoxo

  10. Muah to you too! I’m pretty sure I need to pick up all sorts of cocktail paraphernalia just so I can recreate that orange peel heart, because it’s kind of the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. And congrats on the new camera! I admit I’ve been itching for a new one myself, but I don’t think I could pull the trigger until my old one gives it up…so, yay, you had an excuse to upgrade!

    • I’m the worst at not upgrading until it’s too late! Makes you scramble, but… Whatever. I am happy with how things turned out here!
